SLW is Christ-centered in teaching and sensitive to the needs and concerns of others. We do our best to give people opportunities to put their faith into practice through different avenues of service. We laugh and cry together, rejoice and grieve together, grow together, and walk in faith together - and there is always room for you at SLW.
As members of The Wesleyan Church, International, SLW adheres to our denomination's Statements of Faith. However, don't let that intimidate you - at the core, we are a warm and friendly group of people who try - with God's help - to live the kind of life that brings honor to Him, and we do that by looking to God's Word for direction in our lives.
Why 'beliefs'?
Just about every church around has "distinctives," practices or beliefs that set it apart from other churches. Sometimes these distinctives can be confusing, and you may even find yourself thinking, "If the Bible is true, and Jesus is who he claimed to be, then why in the world are there so many different churches with so many different beliefs?"
And that, my friend, is a very good question.
While some would call these varying beliefs "divisions," in most cases it is more accurately labeled "diversity." While division is almost always a bad thing, diversity can be - in most cases - a very good thing. Different churches and denominations show the beautiful diversity there is within the Church, which can be a strength rather than a weakness. In fact, we believe that when you step back and look at the Church universal, you get a clearer picture of the depth and breadth of the Body of Christ!
Not only that, but we're even optimistic enough to believe that with all this diversity in belief and practice, most Christian churchesprobably agree on 90-95% of Christian teaching, while the remaining issues we don't necessarily agree on would most likely fall into the category of "distinctives."
All that being said, the question still remains: What in the world is a Wesleyan?
There's more you can learn as you work your way through the links we've offered below, but for now it might be helpful for you to know that we share many things in common with other believers. As Wesleyans, we try hard to build on the common good so many Christians bring to the table:
:: Like Baptists, we believe in calling people to repentance and encouraging new believers to give witness to their new life in Christ through public baptism
:: Like Presbyterians, we believe in the power of preaching the Word of God to bring about change in people's lives
:: Like Lutherans, we believe in salvation through Jesus Christ on the authority of Scripture alone, in salvation by faith alone, and in salvation as a gift of God's grace alone
:: Like Catholics, we believe in the seriousness of sin and our great need for a Savior
:: Like Pentecostals, we believe in the life-empowering movement of the Spirit of God in the church, and the personal power and purity that He alone gives believers who desire to live a life truly dedicated to Christ To learn more, enjoy working your way through the following links...
